Beads Look Hard They're There

The pattern is Jeanne by Kirsten Kapur---in Veil of Isis from Knitwitch. On size 6 needles, I am making the scarf size---its triangle and a fun easy to memorize pattern for the body. I have about 12 rows of the lace border to do and I will be done.

I mentioned yesterday that I finally decided to try beading and of course I can't wait to start a project that tells you where to place the beads I just decided to add them to the one I am working on. Its working, its fun and I wonder why I waited so long to try it. The right tools help and I finally found the teeny tiny Crochet hook online at a place called 1-2-3 stitch , and their arrival in the mail on Saturday prompted me to go for it.

I do think there will be more beading projects in my future.

When Thomas is not blocking he is cooking, this pizza crostada has tomato, mozzerella, smoked gouda and spicy shrimp. With a Robert Mondavi Reisling it was a wonderful light lunch.

I was asked what Blocking is!

Blocking is a method of stretching and shaping a finished knitted piece to reach the dimensions suggested in the pattern, to make two pieces that need to match the same size, or to make your stitches look nicer and more even. Lace almost always needs to be blocked to "open up" the design so all those beautiful holes and patterns show in their true glory. From About.com

They say you should not block acrylics that it will not hold its shape, I have blocked (well Tom has) lots of my acrylic projects with no problems and gives them a nice crisp finished look. He uses cold water soak and then just pins adjusts etc until it looks just right as in Alita. We truly have to move furniture to block Girasole but I hope we can get to it soon.

Tea Time on Thursday

one of my favorite tea cozies made by Raveler WoolyWonders

nothing new here today ---- my 2 new shawls are blocking so I will have pictures tomorrow. Thank you all for the concern about being sick but it is just allergy related and when I lie down its worse. Last night though I slept like a baby so all is good.

I read this article today and since so many of my readers are fellow tea drinkers I had to share

Tea 'healthier' drink than water

Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers.

The work in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition dispels the common belief that tea dehydrates.

Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, but it can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, UK nutritionists found.

Experts believe flavonoids are the key ingredient in tea that promote health.

Healthy cuppa

These polyphenol antioxidants are found in many foods and plants, including tea leaves, and have been shown to help prevent cell damage.

Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it
Lead author Dr Ruxton

Public health nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, and colleagues at Kings College London, looked at published studies on the health effects of tea consumption.

They found clear evidence that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack.

Some studies suggested tea consumption protected against cancer, although this effect was less clear-cut.

Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening.

Dr Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so it's got two things going for it."

Rehydrating

She said it was an urban myth that tea is dehydrating.

"Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid.

"Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth," she added.

There was no evidence that tea consumption was harmful to health. However, research suggests that tea can impair the body's ability to absorb iron from food, meaning people at risk of anaemia should avoid drinking tea around mealtimes.

Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink
Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation

Dr Ruxton's team found average tea consumption was just under three cups per day.

She said the increasing popularity of soft drinks meant many people were not drinking as much tea as before.

"Tea drinking is most common in older people, the 40 plus age range. In older people, tea sometimes made up about 70% of fluid intake so it is a really important contributor," she said.

Claire Williamson of the British Nutrition Foundation said: "Studies in the laboratory have shown potential health benefits.

"The evidence in humans is not as strong and more studies need to be done. But there are definite potential health benefits from the polyphenols in terms of reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancers.

"In terms of fluid intake, we recommend 1.5-2 litres per day and that can include tea. Tea is not dehydrating. It is a healthy drink."

The Tea Council provided funding for the work. Dr Ruxton stressed that the work was independent.

It is a long article but so full of info---makes me feel good about my daily indulgence.

WIP Wednesday

Gosh I am late today----another rough night of sleeping in the chair, and when Tom left I hit the bed, my coughing wouldn't be a disturbance then and I slept and slept and slept.

Then I was an hour behind on my errands so I ran to so them first and now I have a moment to blog. It is exquisite today, no AC at the moment, in the 60's, breezy, no humidity ---if we could bottle this for the rest of the summer, we would have it made. THe only problem with the window open is all the neighborhood noises, sirens and various smells permeate and my eyes itch like crazy.

I finished my own design of eyelets and lace last night. Remember the photos are unblocked---I have to have a talk with the master blocker, he is slacking everywhere but the kitchen!! I used 2 colors of Opal Sock Yarn One solid one print, in the tradition of K Kapur's Ulmus I switched every two rows through the body until I had 137 stitches on each side center---varying garter with an eyelet row depending on how it struck me less garter more eyelets towards the end, I then began a garter lace edging, which when blocked will be pointy and scallopy in just the solid color. I used one skein of each and 2 rows worth of a second solid skein. I used size 5 addi's for the project. I like it now, I think I will love it when it is blocked. Entirely garter like the Beach Glass it will be totally reversible.

Then I picked up Alita, she has been languishing while I did Shalom, birthday cupcakes, cats etc, so now its her turn in the spot light again. I will be frogging the second Waterfall, I was not happy with the fabric and will need to rethink what the Panda Silk will be. Yesterday out to lunch with a friend I worked on ScWiNoNa which is probably about 60% done. AND then there is Stonewall which will see the light of day very soon. Projects moving up in line are Nightsong, another cat or two, Dream In Color Shrug and the search is on for another circular project. I really like doing them.

Well off to catch up on everything else I am behind on, have a wonderful day

Ten on Tuesday

I am not comfortable with today's 10 but I am doing it because otherwise I have nothing!!! I am not a judgemental person by nature and I look for the good not the bad in people so even making a list like this seems contradictory to me. But since I am not picking out an individual I can get off my own high horse and make the list. Except for #3 & #7 even I am guilty of all of them at one point or another myself. Why does are ego get in the way of admitting things like that?

'10 Things That Turn You Off About
People'

  1. being judgemental
  2. lies
  3. infidelity
  4. bragging
  5. bigotry
  6. superior airs
  7. lack of basic hygiene
  8. constant use of foul language
  9. verbosity
  10. constant negativity
I am also not a confrontational person so there maybe people I know who have some of these qualities but I would never say a word. We are all doing the best we can with what we know, or I'd like to think so.

I did not knit anymore cats yesterday but I will, I did work on my eyelets and lace shawl that I am designing on the fly and its coming along. this one has a very easy body but the lace is persnickity at best. I hope the end result is effective.

I did receive some mail from my little friend Alora, her mom is back from her trip so our communicatios can resume!!! She is a very talented artist and even did the envelope art all by herself. Thank you Alora----the mailman should have something for you by the end of the week!!!

I also got 2 lovely skeins of Dream In Color Lipstick Lava which is going to be present when it gets made into the Dream In Color Shrug. THE DIC, Mirasol Hacho and Hazel knits all have that nice springy sproingy bouncy feel of yarn that I enjoy working with so much. The Opal sock yarn I am knitting the current shawl with is like that too but is more splitty----maybe the nylon factor.
